The Situation
Vertex's growth had exposed a basic problem: there was no standard way to run a project. Every project manager kept a different system, from spreadsheets and whiteboards to notebooks and memory. Leadership learned about cost overruns when a project was almost finished. Change orders took weeks to reach the financial system, subcontractor payments were processed by hand, and no one had a single view of committed costs. Clients called for updates because there was nowhere to see them, and the company website still described a much smaller contractor. Vertex was not losing projects. It was losing margin on the projects it won.
The Strategy
We worked alongside project teams in the field and in the office, documented how cost, schedule, and change order information moved, and designed the software around that flow. The pattern was consistent: the field knew what was happening, but that knowledge reached the office slowly and in pieces.
